Design to commissioning

Dust extraction systems

We design the whole system: capture hoods at each dust source, the ducting, dampers and fan, and the collector. One team is responsible for how well it works.

Start at the source

Dust that escapes a hood is never collected, however good the collector. So we start every design at the point where dust is released. We look at how it is thrown off, how fast, and where the operator stands, then design an enclosure or hood that captures it with the least airflow.

Ducting that stays clean

Dust settles out if the air in a duct slows down, and it wears out the duct if it moves too fast. We size every branch for the right conveying velocity for your dust, balance the branches so each hood gets its share of air, and use long-radius bends and proper branch entries to keep resistance and wear down.

The fan and the collector

With the airflow and system resistance known, we select the fan and size the collector to suit. The fan is usually on the clean side of the collector, so it handles clean air and lasts longer.

What we design and supply

  • Enclosures, hoods and extraction booths.
  • Spiral and fabricated ducting, bends and branches.
  • Blast gates and dampers for balancing.
  • Centrifugal fans, motors and VSDs.
  • Collector, stack and sampling ports.
  • Controls, sequencers and pressure monitoring.

Upgrading an existing system

Added machines since the system was installed? Hoods that no longer pull? We survey existing systems, measure airflow at each branch and tell you what it will take to fix them.

Short on space? For a mining equipment supplier in Gauteng we combined several smaller collectors to bring an old blast booth in line with current health and safety requirements.

How a project runs

From survey to handover

  1. SurveyWe visit, measure the process and the space, and take dust samples if needed.
  2. Design and quoteHood layout, duct sizing, fan selection and collector sizing, with a fixed quote.
  3. ManufactureCollector and ducting fabricated in our Gauteng workshop.
  4. Install and commissionWe install, balance the system, measure airflow and hand over with training.
Questions we get asked

FAQ

Do you handle installation as well?

Yes. We design, manufacture, install and commission, so there is one point of responsibility for the whole system.

Can you help with our emission licence?

We design collectors to meet the particulate limits in your Atmospheric Emission Licence and fit sampling ports so your stack can be tested.

What about combustible dust?

Wood, flour, sugar, some metal and plastic dusts can be explosive. We design for it with explosion relief, anti-static media, earthing and isolation where the risk calls for it.
